Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure performed to remove gum tissue and, in some cases, bone in order to expose a greater amount of tooth above the gum line. It is done when there is not enough tooth structure to support a filling or dental crown and to fix so-called “gummy smile”. “Gummy smile” refers to excessive gum tissue around upper teeth.
If crown lengthening is performed to prepare the tooth for a dental crown or filling, the surgery usually lasts about an hour. First, you will be given the local anesthesia. Then the dentist will make small cuts in order to pull the gum tissue away from the tooth and remove some of the bone to expose its root. When this is achieved the gums will be stitched together and area will be rinsed with saline water. After a week or so you will return to the office for a follow-up evaluation and to have your stitches removed. When the healing period is over, you will have another appointment to complete the treatment and have your filling or permanent dental crown fitted.
Crown lengthening is a minor surgical procedure that gives great results. In order to avoid any discomforts, we will make sure to deliver a service of the highest quality and provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your mouth after the surgery. And remember, our dentists are always available to address any of your concerns and put a smile back on your face!
